Hannah comes from the Hebrew Ḥannāh, meaning grace or favour. In the Hebrew Bible, Hannah is the desperately childless wife of Elkanah who prays so intensely at the Tabernacle that the priest Eli mistakes her for a drunkard. Her prayer is answered, and she gives birth to Samuel, who becomes one of Israel's most important prophets. Her prayer of thanksgiving (1 Samuel 2:1-10) is considered one of the great poetic passages in scripture. The name is the source of Anna, Anne, and all their variants. Hannah held the US number-one position from 1998 to 2001. Hannah Montana (2006-2011), starring Miley Cyrus, kept the name culturally visible for a younger generation.
