Madison was a patronymic surname meaning son of Maud (a medieval form of Matilda). James Madison, fourth President of the United States, gave the surname national prominence. As a girl's name, its origin is remarkably precise: in the 1984 film Splash, Daryl Hannah's mermaid character sees a Madison Avenue street sign and adopts it as her name — the other characters laugh, saying it's not a real name.
