Hannah comes from the Hebrew Channah meaning grace or God has graced me. In the Bible, Hannah was the mother of the prophet Samuel — a woman who prayed fervently for a child after years of infertility, and her heartfelt prayer is considered one of the earliest examples of personal prayer in scripture. The name has been used continuously throughout the English-speaking world for centuries. It is also a perfect palindrome — it reads the same forwards and backwards — a pleasing symmetry that many parents find charming.
