Lilith comes from the Akkadian līlītu, meaning of the night. In Jewish folklore (particularly the Alphabet of Ben Sira, c. 700–1000 AD), Lilith was created alongside Adam as his first wife, but refused to be subordinate and left Eden. She was demonised in medieval texts. Modern feminism reclaimed Lilith as a symbol of female autonomy and equality. Lilith Fair (1997–1999, 2010), founded by Sarah McLachlan, was the most successful all-female touring festival in music history. The name has been climbing the US charts.
