Iris is a rainbow, a flower, and the coloured part of your eye — three beautiful things in four letters. In Greek mythology, Iris was the goddess who rode rainbows between heaven and earth, carrying messages from the gods. The flower was named for the rainbow goddess because of its spectacular range of colours. It's a name that connects vision, nature, and mythology in a single breath.

Danish / Dutch / English / Finnish / French / German / Greek / Norwegian / Spanish / Swedish roots
Iris was the Greek goddess of the rainbow and a messenger between gods and mortals. She travelled on rainbows, connecting Olympus to Earth. The iris flower was named for her because of its extraordinary colour range — irises come in virtually every colour. The iris of the eye (the coloured ring) was also named for the goddess, because of its diverse pigmentation. Iris Murdoch (1919–1999) was one of the 20th century's most important novelists and philosophers. The name has climbed steadily in the US, entering the top 100 in recent years as botanical and mythological names converge in popularity.
