Hazel comes from the Old English hæsel, the name of the hazelnut tree. In Celtic mythology, the hazel was one of the most sacred trees — eating hazelnuts from the Salmon of Knowledge gave Fionn mac Cumhaill (Finn MacCool) all the wisdom of the world. Hazel wands were used for divination. As a given name, Hazel became fashionable in the late 1800s, peaked in the 1920s, then declined sharply. Its dramatic modern revival owes much to John Green's The Fault in Our Stars (2012), where Hazel Grace Lancaster became one of the most beloved young adult heroines of the decade.
