Axel is the Scandinavian form of Absalom, from the Hebrew meaning father of peace. Archbishop Absalon (1128–1201) founded Copenhagen. The axel jump, the most technically difficult in figure skating, was named for Norwegian skater Axel Paulsen who first performed it in 1882. Axl Rose (born William Bruce Rose Jr.) adopted the name and fronted Guns N' Roses, one of the greatest rock bands. Beverly Hills Cop's Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) added comedy-action energy.
