📖 About the breed

Meet the Pekingese

Bred for over 2,700 years as the sacred lion-dog of Chinese emperors, the Pekingese was so revered that commoners had to bow to them — and stealing one carried the death penalty until the Forbidden City fell in 1860.

Pekingese are walking pieces of Chinese imperial history. When British forces sacked the Forbidden City in 1860, they discovered five Pekingese (the rest had been killed by retreating courtiers). One of those five, named Looty, was gifted to Queen Victoria.

Pick a name with Chinese imperial heritage that matches their aristocratic, slightly mystical bearing.

❓ Pekingese puppy FAQs

Questions Pekingese puppy owners ask

What are the best names for a male Pekingese?

Chinese imperial names like Ming, Tao, Bao, Long. Or lion-themed — Leo, Simba, Foo.

What's a good name for a female Pekingese?

Chinese favourites like Mei, Lin, Suki, Pearl. Or royal — Empress, Phoenix, Lotus.

Should I give my Pekingese a Chinese name?

Yes — they're sacred Chinese dogs. Imperial Chinese names match their 2,700-year heritage perfectly.

What's a good Pekingese puppy name?

Pekingese stay small and majestic their whole lives — names like Ming, Mei, Leo or Pearl age beautifully across 12–14 years.

Why are Pekingese called 'lion dogs'?

They were bred to resemble the small foo lions (guardian temple statues) of Chinese Buddhist iconography. Their flowing manes and golden coats deliberately echo lion imagery.
