Dahlia is a flower named for a scientist — Anders Dahl, the 18th-century Swedish botanist. The dahlia flower, native to Mexico, was cultivated by the Aztecs centuries before Europeans arrived. It blooms in an extraordinary range of colours and forms, from dinner-plate-sized explosions to perfect geometric spheres. It's a name that carries Aztec horticulture, Scandinavian science, and botanical extravagance in three syllables.

Origin & history of Dahlia
Anders Dahl (Swedish botanist) Latin Dahlia (flower genus, 1791) given name Dahlia
1
English / Swedish roots
The dahlia flower was named in 1791 for Anders Dahl (1751–1789), a student of the great botanist Linnaeus. The plant is native to Mexico, where the Aztecs cultivated it both as food (the tubers are edible) and for ornamental purposes. The dahlia is Mexico's national flower. It comes in virtually every colour except blue and produces the most geometrically complex blooms of any garden plant. The Black Dahlia murder case (1947) gave the name a darker association, but modern parents are drawn to the flower's spectacular beauty. The name has entered the US top 300.
